Poker takes 5 minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master

Poker is a very complex game and as one of the most popular quotes amongst poker players says, ‘poker takes 5 minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master". As a novice just starting out on your poker journey, these are 5 poker tips that we recommend you try and master before any others:

1.Don’t play too many hands – It is understandable that you want to play every hand, and it can get boring just folding and folding, however, patience is key when it comes to poker and you need to ensure you limit the number of hands you play, especially when you are in early position.

2. Don’t bluff too much – If you watch all the coverage on TV, you will often see some players winning or losing a lot by bluffing. Whilst this can be useful sometimes, it shouldn’t be a large part of your poker strategy and in real poker, it doesn’t happen nearly as often as you see on the TV…

3. Consider what your opponents have – Poker is all about having the best hand and just because you have a good hand, it doesn’t always follow that it is the best hand. Be aware of what the community cards are likely to give to other players as well as your own hand and play accordingly. For example, if you have a straight and then there are 4 cards of the same suit on the board, it is likely someone else has a flush, rendering your own hand second rate.

4. The position is important – When you are playing poker, the player who goes first changes each hand as the Dealer button moves around the table. The earlier you play, the less you know about what your opponents have. Therefore, in earlier positions, play less starting hands than you would do if you are one of the last to go and therefore you have more of an idea of what most other players have to start with.

5. Concentrate on the game – We have already said that patience is key with poker, but the more you know about your opponents, the better read of the game you will have. Although this is harder to do online, make notes on your opponents if you can as to whether they bet big, call all the time, fold everything etc. The more information you can get, the easier it will be to determine when they have something good and when they are bluffing…

These are just some basic poker tips that will help you get started in online poker. Remember that at PokerStellar you can play for free whilst you learn the game, so head over there, have fun whilst you learn the game and who knows, the next big win could be right around the corner.
